An unusually active and high-quality program, the Ridgewood High School New Players Company mounts around 7 productions a year: a fall play, an early winter play, a Cabaret, a student-directed musical revue (New Players in Concert), a spring musical, a spring play (or 2), and a summer musical, plus a play performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival every third year. Nurtured by a dedicated team of theater professionals (directors, choreographers, music directors, set, lighting, and sound designers, technical directors, costumers) and staff, New Players is THE premier high school performing arts program in Bergen County and beyond.
About New Players.
Not Your Average Drama Club.
Theater of Many Genres and Styles.
Show selections range from Broadway favorites (Les Misérables, Anything Goes, Chicago, Shrek the Musical, Mean Girls, Mamma Mia!) to classic plays (Our Town, Amadeus, Arsenic and Old Lace) to comedies (Clue: On Stage, The Play That Goes Wrong), to sketch improv, to contemporary theater (26 Pebbles, Orphan Train, The Wolves) to Shakespeare (Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet).
Opportunities On Stage and Off.
While the talent of our New Players will knock your socks off, not every New Player craves the spotlight! In addition to acting, singing, and dancing, New Players design and build sets; hang, focus, and operate lights; install and run the sound system; design and create elaborate costumes; play in the orchestra pit; run stage crew; take on leadership positions to advocate for the company to the school and community; learn stage management and promotion, and more!
The Company We Keep.
The year-round activity creates a tight-knit community within Ridgewood High School. With something always in the works, students build strong bonds with one another and learn to work together — on stage and off — to bring a production to life. New Players range from super involved, working on almost every show, to those who may only do New Players in Concert, or Improv, or the summer musical. But everyone is welcome, and there is no “bar” to meet: if you consider yourself a New Player, you ARE a New Player.
